We have an issue with the date we have chosen. Not sure how many of you have driven thru our pick up area lately, but it is snowpacked the whole way. I think all the trash to pick is under a couple of feet of concrete snow. Unless we have major meltdown, ther is not much to pick.

Last time I drove through, it was clear on the shoulder pavement, and the snow pack started just off of that. True, we wouldn't get as much picked up, but if we do it, will we still pick up enough to make it worthwhile? I've heard that the first pick-ups can be brutal in terms of the extra time it takes to clean up an area that hasn't been done before, whereas subsequent efforts aren't nearly as bad because it's only what accumulated since the last pick-up. I was thinking that this snow cover might split up that extra effort because what's covered in snow we will get at the next event?
What do you think? I haven't driven by since last Saturday and it was getting dark at that point...

The idea of the trash pick up is to get down in the ditches. There isn't any trash on the shoulder since it all got plowed off. You're right, the first pickup is really hard work, and we will be walking in the snow. Don't forget your boots. I may have to bring out the pink ones!

I'm keeping my calendar open this Sunday morning! I can't speak for "him". Maybe he'll make me a poke-stick.
I'll keep watching this thread for the final go-no go decision and will have both training videos viewed and imprinted by Sunday. Now where's my

I picked up the vests and bags this morning. There will be signs placed in the area that we have to erect while we are out there.
Can someone make me a stick?

I watched the area on my way up the hill. Your ID sign is not up at Mariposa, but that is no big deal. Like Paca said on Monday, the roadside is hard crusty ice. I did note some crime scene tape, a pair of gloves and a dead rodent. If it snows again this weekend, that will also be frozen, after the plows go by. It was to dark this morning to check out the down hill side. Have a nice hike. If you do it again in June, or May, I will join you

Hoot, the Adopt A Highway contact told me that the sign company is running behind on orders so it would be at least a couple of months before they put up the purple signs (that was in November), but we'll have temporary signs to set out as we're cleaning up.
I've been keeping an eye on the forecasts, but, frustratingly, nothing is definitive - flurries are projected, 1-3 inches in some places but nobody's saying exactly where. I think we'll have to decide by tomorrow - if it snows and covers everything up, a postponement is in order, especially on top of the already existing snow covering part of our section. I've left a message with our Adopt A Highway coordinator to see how late we can inform them that we aren't picking up so they don't leave signs out, or arrange for a truck to pick up bags we would leave.
We have to do clean-ups 2-3 times/year so we'll definitely have one in the summer, and again in mid-fall I'm guessing.
